Western Gratitude

There is so much to love about living and learning in Western North Carolina.

” I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness – it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.” ~ Brene Brown

Why come to Western?

Geographically Western Carolina is a beautiful mountainous region with waterfalls jam packed almost anywhere you can find a creek or river. In less than 30 minutes you can be on the Blue Ridge Parkway enjoying some of the best views the east coast has to offer. I know what you’re thinking, “What is there to do other than be outside?” Within 40 minutes you can enjoy North Carolinas very own mountain city, Asheville. So, if need be Asheville has more than all of your consumer needs. Places and things to do aside, the people of Western Carolina are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. It’s no surprise when you’re running to get coffee and the person next to you strikes up a conversation with you.

Come to Western!

“There a few reasons I love Western Carolina, first is the endless amount of things to do outdoors. For me I love the mountain roads which are awesome for riding motorcycles and perfect for getting a quick ride in before class. Second is the smaller student body, the main reason I didn’t want to go to a bigger university is because I feel it would be depressing to not see anyone you know when walking across campus, since Western is a smaller campus you’re bound to see at least a few friends when hanging out on campus. The last thing I enjoy about Western is how fast its growing and the new things I am getting to experience on campus as it grows, for me campus has been a little different every single year. These are the reasons I love WCU along with many others.”

“I love WCU because it feels like a home away from home to me. I love the family that I feel has grown around me on this campus. I have met many lifelong friends while here at Western that I truly feel make my life better and make the world a better place. I also think the faculty and staff here are talented, smart, and engaging. I feel better walking out into the professional world with my degrees thanks to the knowledge and level of preparation I received of WCU.”

“Western was my choice based on the environment and feeling of being in the right place. In this environment, you get to experience first hand nature once you just walk outside no matter what time of the year it is. You will also get to open up like myself to the breweries and bars that share that Western environment feeling. You can always share these types of moments with other people that want to experience that as well. Also notice attractions like the Blue Ridge Parkway and take part in things like the Mountain Heritage  Day or evening go hiking.”

“There is a lot to love about Western Carolina. There are the obvious reasons : NC Promise, being the Top Adventure College for five years, and getting to experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains right outside your door, but there is so much more than that. Western offers a wide variety of majors and minors for students to explore; ranging from Forensic Anthropology, to Marketing, to Musical Theatre. Opportunities abound, whether its joining an intermural sports team, going to see a musical or play, visiting the art museum, going on University Center trips, or getting a job in your field of study at the school! You have every chance to grow, learn, and prosper each moment you’re enrolled. My favorite thing about Western is the support and sense of community I get from my faculty and peers; my success is their success, my failures are an opportunity for growth, and my goals are believed in. Once you find what you want to do at Western, you’re never alone. You’ll always have a teacher, a peer, a class, someone who cares about you and is there for you; watching you succeed.”

“What I love about Western Carolina University is the friends I have made over my five years here. I started here as a freshman and first attracted to WCU because of the outdoor activities Cullowhee and the surrounding areas have to offer. First semester freshman year I found a friend group that I am still friends with to this day, we all enjoy fishing and hunting, and a couple of us have worked together at various golf clubs in Highlands over the past three summers.

Another thing I love about Western Carolina University is the fishing. The fishing up here is world class. Since coming to Western Carolina I have learned to fly fish, and fly fishing has quickly become one of my favorite hobbies, I’ve learned a lot of new techniques and secret places to fish that I will continue to come back to whenever I may find myself back in Cullowhee.”

“What I love most about Western Carolina University are the friends that I have made while attending here. I’ve met some of the most wonderful people I’ve ever known while living in Jackson County. I’ve found more than just friends during my time here. I’ve found family. They are the Catamounts for Christ; and I am so incredibly blessed to know them.”
